People have used herbs for thousands of years in their everyday lives from medicine to seasoning people have used herbs. Today people sometimes take inspiration from older herb garden landscape designs to create something new from a classic idea.Choosing herb for herb garden landscaping design is very personal; one needs to plan the desired focus of the garden. This is a very basic gardening theory but a good one; think of a single intent for the garden and build from that. The ChefA culinary herb garden landscape design can combine the beauty of the outdoors with their passion for cooking. Common herbs like sage, parsley, garlic, rosemary, oregano, chives, and mint have many lovely qualities that can be enjoyed outside of cooking.Sage is very aromatic; parsley is beautiful, garlic flowers and grows easily in most areas. Rosemary is also very aromatic, oregano is another herb that makes a nice bushy ground covering and chives will flower as well. The Aroma-therapistHerb garden landscaping designs are ideally suited for aromatherapy. People may enjoy the tranquil effects of herbs and combinations of herbs simply by sitting in a comfortable chair, hammock, or swing in their herb garden.Aroma-therapists can plant complimentary herbs together to form the best combinations for mood enhancement. One form of herb garden landscaping design is to plant herbs in beds according to a need or aesthetic appeal. This type of container gardening is also ideally suited for aromatherapy.Lavender for example is a very common aromatherapy herb; it can be planted alone for some purposes and can be planted with other herbs in a container to achieve a specific blend of herbs.Medicinal HerbsFor thousands of years people have used herbs for medicinal purposes, once people started cultivating the most useful herbs, herb garden landscaping design was born. People would often have two separate herb collections, one which was grown towards the back of their property for herbs that would be dried and stored. A second herb garden was often grown closer to a person's home to be used as needed.Pure EnjoymentMany herb garden landscaping designs are inspired by people's pure enjoyment of the herb they grow. Herbs can make a fragrant border to a lawn and a beautiful ground covering for gardens. Combining vegetables, flowers, and herbs in one garden bed can make a very beautiful and interesting garden area. One way to accomplish this type of herb garden landscaping design is to grow things together which are used together. Bell peppers, tomatoes, and basil all like the full sun and plenty of water, the three plants will grow well together. Mint, lemon balm, and impatients can all be grown together in the shade for a beautiful accent under a porch or flowering shrub.

Container Gardening For Beginners

Landscaping Ideas And Gardening Ideas

Many people love to garden, but quite simply don't have the room, or they want to bring a part of their garden indoors. Container gardening allows you to grow your garden any place you have the room.

If you take a look at the pictures of my garden elsewhere on this site, you can see that I've taken container gardening to something of an extreme - my containers are about 8 feet long and allow me to have a pretty decent vegetable garden. We did it this way because there was no easy way to plant a vegetable garden in the home we are renting, but really wanted to show our children where vegetables come from.

Most container gardens, however, are done in much smaller containers. The exact size depends on the needs of the plant involved.

Many plants are small enough to do well in smaller containers, allowing you to hang them or place them on your patio, or even indoors. They can be a part of your home's decor or a fun way to grow just a few vegetables.

The containers can be arranged to bring out the beauty of all the plants. Larger plants can be behind smaller ones or you can use a tiered display to hold similarly sized plants at different levels.

You don't have to limit yourself to vegetables and herbs in your container garden. The plants don't even have to flower to look beautiful. Choose based on where you want to grow them (indoor, outdoors, lots of sun or just a little), how much care you are willing to take of them and what plants you just like to look at. Done right these plants will be with you a very long time.

One of the nice things about growing plants indoors is that you don't get very many weeds at all. That saves quite a bit of maintenance.

Don't choose your plants based on the pot they are in at the garden store. You will want to repot them with a good potting soil when you get them home, and that is the time to choose your pot. Many plants will come to you in a root bound condition, so they will need a larger pot than the one you purchased them in.

Indoor gardening, or gardening that is done indoors as in offices and residences, has become a popular hobby. Other than its aesthetic appeal, it also provides health benefits such as purification of air. Generally houseplants are grown in indoor gardening. The more popular methods of indoor gardening include organic gardening and container gardening where the use of chemicals is avoided.

Thousands of houseplants are grown in indoor gardening. Typical houseplants include ferns, cactus, bonsai plants, daffodils, hyacinths, rose plants, rubber, Chinese evergreen, money plant, weeping fig, zebra plant, prayer plant, philodendrons, orchids, jade plant, African violets, English ivy, begonias etc.

Indoor gardening requires patience and continuous care to yield good results. The important factors in successful indoor gardening are light, watering, soil, plant pots, fertilisers and pesticides.

Light: Light is very important for indoor plants as plants prepare food by photosynthesis. Two factors of light are intensity and duration. Different plants need different intensities. Duration of 8 to10 hours of sunlight is more than sufficient for the plants.

Watering: Improper watering is the leading cause of death of plants in indoor gardening. Watering once a week is sufficient. Feel for dampness about an inch under the soil; if the soil is damp do not water.

Soil:Water drainage through soil is very important. Usually coir and peat are added in soil to improve drainage. Plants like cactus need very high drainage.

Humidity: Plants roughly need a humidity of 80% RH. This can be achieved by placing a tray filled with pebbles and the water level just below the pebbles, adjacent to the plant.

Fertilisers: Fertilisers contain phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium. Changing the soil is better than adding feriliser.

Pesticides: If the houseplants become affected by pests, use a garlic and chilly juice to spray on the plants, rather than using chemical pesticides.

Pots: Pots of clay are preferred as they help in water drainage and aeration of soil better than glazed or plastic pots. Use correct sized pots as plants in pots that are too large are prone to root disease due to moisture retention. A small pot restricts the growth of plants. The pots need to be changed around once in two years.

Tools: Investing in good tools is better in the long run, as the tools are used for tough jobs. Clean the tools thoroughly after use.

Indoor gardening is one of the most popular hobbies in the world. It gives great satisfaction to see the plants growing, as well as improving the aesthic appeal and atmosphere of the interior.

By: Deborah Carraro

Container gardening solves many problems for the avid & novice gardener. It's the ideal solution to challenges such as limited space and poor soil.

Container gardening also allows you to place your garden where you want and need it. Container gardening can also improve monitoring and control so that optimal growing conditions can be maintained.

But what is container gardening? Container gardening is the raising of plants in soil filled containers outside of the traditional garden. It affords many people the chance to garden who would otherwise not have the space for an open garden on the ground. Container gardening is ideal for city dwellers who have only a balcony or rooftop to garden on. But even if space is not a problem, container gardening can just make gardening easier and more convenient.

While any type of container will do, it's best to use something that's not too shallow and does not leak. Most Home and Garden stores and nurseries sell prefabricated containers for container gardening. Or you can simply build your own to fit the space. With a little imagination, almost anything can be used for your container gardening project. An old wheel barrow or large kettle for instance. Even an old computer case! The container you select for container gardening doesn't just have to be functional. It can also be a design element.

Good quality soil is critical to a plant's growth and continued health. And container gardening affords you the chance to totally control the medium your plants are growing in. Buying good quality planting and potting mix helps assure you of a successful container gardening project. Since container gardening is usually in containers under twenty gallons in size, it is a wise idea not to scrimp on the cost of soil. Once you have your container and soil, it is time to begin container gardening.

Select your container. As stated earlier, the container should not be too shallow. It needs to be large enough for deep root development. Just make sure it is clean to begin with and then fill the bottom with two to three inches of gravel or drainage and then fill the rest of the container with soil. If you're using a large container for your container gardening, remember that it may be very heavy once it's filled with rocks and soil, so you may want to prepare it in the spot where it will be used so you don't have to move it. Once your container is filled and in place, you will want to give the soil a good watering to settle everything and to wet any peat moss that may be in the potting mix. Once this is done, you are ready to plant your plants according to the needs of the individual plants.

Proper watering is also an important element of successful container gardening. Plants in containers will need more frequent watering than plants in an open garden. So particular attention needs to be paid to watering, especially on hot sunny days. A drip irrigation system for your container gardening project will take care of this need easily and will protect your plants from the trauma of fainting on a hot day from lack of water.

Container gardening can be fun and easy with just a little planning and preparation. Plan your container garden today.

Container gardens allow people who don't have the space, time or energy for a full garden to still nourish their green thumb and grow beautiful flowers. Container gardens can look beautiful on a rooftop, on a busy city stoop, on a patio or deck and even mixed in with your regular garden.

Plants are easy to grow in containers and are a versatile way of creating a colorful garden. Containers are great because you can move your plants around to create different effects. If one plant isn't doing well, or the bloom season has passed, simply remove it and replace it with another container. You can arrange your containers in a group, line them up or strategically place them singly around your yard or patio. Either way, you'll love this simple way to create a garden oasis anywhere you want.

You can use most anything for a container, but be sure it has good drainage. Try old bowls or antique urns. If there is no drain hole, be sure to include lots of rocks on the bottom of the container. Terra cotta pots are nice but tend to absorb water which can cause your plants to dry out - if you do decide to go with these pots, you can paint the inside with a special sealer to prevent this. Always try to get a matching saucer or use a special plate or drip basin for your containers as this will save your deck or patio from getting stained or rotting.

Always use a good quality potting mix in your containers. This will ensure the best performance possible from your plants.

When planting in containers, be sure to use a good potting mix that has fertilizer appropriate for the plant you will be planting. Do not overcrowd the plants in the pot - remember that with proper care they will grow into the pot and you don't want them to be overcrowded because they may start to look unhealthy. Be sure to keep your container plants watered but do not over water. Plants in containers can dry out very easily so you will probably have to water every day and fertilize every month.

When planning your container garden you want to be sure to have plants of varying heights as well as shapes and textures. Any setting will look better with taller plants in the back and lower ones in the front. Using annuals that bloom all year will keep your pots looking fresh and beautiful, but don't forget to add in some nice greenery as well.

It's best to decide ahead of time where you want your containers to be positioned, and then buy plants that suit the situation. It won't do to buy sun loving plants if the container is going to be in the shade for they will not do well. Also be aware that some plants have large root systems and are not suitable for container planting.

Some great places for container gardens include the patio, deck, driveway and porch. If you have steps leading up to your front door, an attractive container on each one is a great way to welcome your visitors. If there is a lot of space by your front door group a bunch of potted plants off to one side which will be more visually appealing than one plant on each side of the steps. When grouping your plants, always group in odd numbers and make sure to vary the heights and sizes of the pots as well as the plants.

Container gardening is a great because you can limit the amount of plants you have to take care of. If you only want a few then just have a couple of containers but if you can handle more than go for it. With a little bit of creativity you can create a container garden that will be the envy of your friends and neighbors.
About The Author

On behalf of The Food for Everyone Foundation I am pleased to announce the launch of a unique Teachers? Virtual Gardening Training Program, that promises to empower teachers with real gardening skills, along with teaching and demonstration materials, like nothing has ever done before

The foundation's generosity in giving almost $300 worth of unique gardening materials to qualifying teachers is simply fulfilling the foundation's mission of 'teaching the world to grow food one family at a time.?

We have been working for many years to make these materials readily available in a format that can be downloaded to computers anywhere in the world. I am excited at the program's potential for helping young people get back to the basics of really knowing where their food comes from, and even growing their own food.

We are looking for teachers who teach - or who want to teach gardening - and particularly for those who would like to display and promote their class's vegetable gardens on a website. This could be especially beneficial if the school supports the class and garden.

The foundation is prepared to donate the following digital books and training videos, created by world-renowned Dr. Jacob R. Mittleider, for qualifying teachers? use:

* Six Steps to Successful Gardening - a graphically illustrated short book on the basics.

* Mittleider Gardening Course - created by BYU PhD's in Educational Psychology - Excellent!

* Gardening By the Foot - Pictorial how-to on container gardening around the world.

* Lets Grow Tomatoes - The favorite of millions. Teaches you tomato growing start to finish.

* Mittleider Gardening Manuals (9) - On several of the most important gardening subjects.

* Grow-Bed Gardening - Hundreds of pictures show & teach growing in the natural soil.

* Soil-Bed Gardening Basics (23 videos) - 10 to 20 minutes each on dirt gardening, or

* Grow-Box Gardening Basics (21 videos) - covers everything needed for container growing.

These vegetable gardening books and videos are so GOOD the foundation is able to promise people ?a great garden in any soil, in almost any climate?, and further promise that those following the true principles and procedures taught will typically increase their garden yields by a factor of 5 to 10 times! Specific information on each book is found at www.foodforeveryone.org/store

Only the Six Steps to Successful Gardening book is needed for a teacher to jump-start the gardening season right away, and the easiest way to develop a first year quick-start teaching plan is to follow the Six Steps book page by page.

The Mittleider Gardening Course is designed for the student who wants more in-depth information, or if the class needs or wants to grow in containers. The combination of the two, along with the other digital training material, provides for teaching students from Elementary all the way through College levels.

As classes start and begin to see results from their gardens they are requested to document their progress and success on their own website. The foundation will also give some direction and assistance in setting up a website to those who request it.

Agriculture-based and other teachers interested in teaching vegetable gardening using the foundation's methods are encouraged to send an email to Steve@Foodforeveryone.org and put 'teachers' Virtual Gardening Training Program? in the subject line.

An easy, proven way to save you money whileproviding good nutrition for your family!

You don't think you have a green thumb'that's OK--you don't really need one!Just a little knowledge and info to get youstarted!!

Those of us who live in rural areas have a decided advantage over city and apartmentdwellers. We can nearly always find roomfor a vegetable garden even if it's a smallone!

But even if you don't have an acre or two ofland to play with, don't despair! You can stillsupplement your grocery budget with freshveggies grown in a container garden--even ifthe only space you have is on your patio!

Tomatoes are about the easiest vegetablesto grow. They come in all sizes: from bite-sizecherry tomatoes to great big beefsteaktomatoes. And tastewise, store-bought tomatoes just can't compare to vine-ripened!

The first step to starting a container garden isto locate your container. You can use almostanything. A half-barrel, the kind you see forsale at garden centers, works great. You mayhave plastic buckets already on hand and thesecan work, too.

If you use buckets, usually one plant to eachbucket is enough. And keep in mind, one plant canproduce a lot of tomatoes!

Just put a layer of rocks in the bottom of your chosen container for drainage. Then fill withquality potting soil about 2/3 thirds of the wayfull.

Tomatoes are best grown from seedlings. Mostgarden centers, discount stores, and even somegrocery stores have these in stock in the spring.

Remove the plant from the plastic pot it comes inby squeezing the bottom of the pot to loosen thesoil and gently lift it from the pot. Carefully loosen the roots a little as sometimes they tendto be a little root-bound in the small pots.

Dig a hole a little bigger than your plant ball andjust set your tomato into the hole right up to theleaves and fill all around with more potting soil.

Of course, you must water the plants to make themgrow!
If you would love to grow healthy, fresh vegetables and vibrant, beautiful flowers but have limited space, organic container gardening can be the answer you've been looking for. This creative type of natural gardening can be done just about anywhere and it can even be easier than maintaining a traditional garden plot.

Here are three things to consider for simple organic container gardening, regardless of the amount of space you may have.

Start With Organic Soil

It only stands to reason that for any successful venture in organic container gardening, one would need organic soil. A regular, outdoor garden begins with the soil or dirt that you already have and then organic materials are added to increase nutrients. But you'll be ahead of the game if you start with organic soil to begin with.

With organic container gardening, you won't have any sub-soil to help retain water which in turn prevents the roots from becoming too wet. The best way to correct this problem is with simple peat moss. Peat moss can either be used alone or added to your organic soil along with compost or composted manure and the result is an excellent soil mixture for organic container gardening.

Use Plain or Creative Containers

Put your imagination to the test as just about anything that will hold soil and water can be used for organic container gardening. While some gardeners prefer to take the natural route and use pots made from clay or wood, you are really only limited by your own resourcefulness.

Although, pots and containers that won't fall apart when they get wet and that will also drain properly work best for organic container gardening. If needed, you could always drill holes into the bottom of the container and then add about an inch or so of gravel to aid with drainage. Also, a few layers of torn newspaper or leaf mold atop the gravel will help retain water just enough to keep the soil moist as well.

Plant Your Crop

With the use of organic container gardening, you can plant the same plants and vegetables that you would in any other garden such as tomatoes, peppers, beans or herbs. The key is using containers appropriate in size to what you are planting. For instance, zucchini plants will need the same amount of room in the container as they do out in the garden, so be sure to have something that will allow the plant room to grow healthily.

Organic seeds and plants will work best with organic container gardening, and you will also find that you'll rarely have a problem with most garden pests while using this particular method. It's much easier to keep pests at bay and keep an eye on leaves and stems with organic container gardening rather than with a large, regular garden. Ladybugs will still help with insect infestation and diatomaceous earth can still be used to deter slugs from destroying your plants.

Basically, the same practices you would apply to traditional gardening can be used with organic container gardening. And anywhere you may have a sheltered area that receives enough light; you can enjoy the fruits, or vegetables, of organic container gardening all year long.

Ornamental Grasses can add a beautiful arrangement to your container garden. These grasses have fine leaves that blow in the smallest of winds and will certainly add an extra aesthetic flavor to your garden. These grasses come in many wonderful textures and colors. Some of these great colors are red, purple, tan, pink and white. With very little research, you are sure to find the right grass that will fit will into your container garden arrangement.

Ornamental grasses will bloom in midsummer. They can grow anywhere from 1' to 9' tall, depending on the variety. These ornamental grasses are also great for lining in front of fenses or creating walls.

Full sunlight and excellent water drainage is the perfect setting for these ornamental grasses. They will not thrive very well in shaded areas. These grasses are very easy to take care of, with very low maintenance. They are great for cut flowers. They have beautiful and unusual foilage and can last throughout the year. You will need to apply a layer of compost every spring and put a layer of mulch, about two inches over this. This will control the weeds and help to retain moister. If it rains less than 1 inch per week during the summer months, you will also need to water the ornamental grasses. At the end of every winter, it is a good idea to cut back the plant to stimulate new growth for the summer. If you have Fountain Grass, you may need to stake it every 3-4 years. Some of the other varieties will require you to divide it every 3-4 years. This will encourage new growth.

When planting the ornamental grasses in your container garden, you will need to plant them about 1 to 3 fee apart. This will depend on the variety of your ornamental grass. First till your soil, about 10 inches deep, then add a 4 inch layer of compost. When planting, make sure the top of the root ball is even with the surface of your soil. After filling in the hole, water completely. Soon, your ornamental grasses will begin to grow, adding a wonderful quality to your container garden.

Container Gardening: Urban Alternative for Plant Lovers

Landscaping Ideas And Gardening Ideas

Gardening fanatics, with no space for a garden, like apartment dwellers and those in shared housing, can be assured gardening is not inevitably gone from their lives. You can always build a container garden on a balcony, patio, deck, or sunny window. Not only the joy of flowers but vegetables and some fruits can be grown. You can raise perennials, annuals, and even shrubs and small trees all in a container.

Container gardening can present it's own set of challenges. It requires proper planning just like any other kind of gardening. You'll need to find your USDA zone (to identify plants suitable for your zone), see how much daylight you get in your apartment or balcony, and from there you can select the best plant variety.

When buying plants be prudent and choose ones with a healthy appearance and good natural shape. Trunks should be straight. Stay away from plants with twisted, slanted or deformed stems, which can affect the healthy growth of a plant. Try to buy your plants from the local nursery unless you have the right conditions to raise seedlings indoors.

For your container, glazed ceramic pots with drainage holes are a good choice. Terracotta pots are nice looking, true, but dry out quickly and leave your plants without moisture. Wooden containers are good, but can be susceptible to rot. Cedar and redwood are fairly rot resistant and make nice containers but make sure the wood is not treated with creosote or other toxic materials that can damage the plants.

Although you in general don't want to keep your container garden plants outside when the temperature dips below 45? F, there are plants that are frost resistant for colder climates. Eulalia grasses, Mexican feather grass, Cornflowers, Lavender cottons, Jasmine, Million bells, and Stonecrops, stand up to the frost well.

If you follow these few suggestions you will be off to a good start with your new minature garden creation.
About The Author

Introducing Container Gardening

Landscaping Ideas And Gardening Ideas

Container gardens are the means to creating a natural sanctuary in a garden on almost any busy city street, along rooftops or on balconies. You can easily accentuate the welcoming look of a deck or patio with colourful pots of annuals, or fill your window boxes with beautiful shrub roses or any number of small perennials. It doesn't matter whether you arrange your pots in a group for a massed effect or showcase a smaller space with a single dlightful specimen, you're bound to be enchanted with this simple way to create a spectacular garden.

Container gardening enables you diversify your color scheme, and as each plant finishes its flowering, it can be replaced with another. Whether you choose to harmonize themes in your garden, or to contrast your colors, do your best to ensure there exists a variety in the height of each plant. Take into consideration, also, the shape and texture of the leaves. Tall strap-like leaves will give a good vertical background to low-growing, wide-leaved plants. Choose plants with a long flowering season, or have others of a different type ready to replace them as they finish blooming.

Experiment with creative containers. You might have an old porcelain bowl or copper urn you can use, or perhaps you'd rather make something really modern with timber or tiles. We used old pre-WWII mixing bowls found in our cellar and Pooh-bear honey pots to create our container garden - you can use all sorts of things. If you decide to buy your containers ready-made, terracotta pots look wonderful, but tend to absorb water. You don't want your plants to dry out, so a tip is to paint the interior of these pots with a special sealer available from hardware stores.

Cheaper plastic pots can also be painted on the outside with water-based paints to improve their overall look. When purchasing pots or containers of any kind, don't forget to procure (or paint) matching saucers to catch the drips. This will save cement floors getting stained, or timber floors rotting. Be sure always to use a good quality potting mix in your containers. This will ensure the best performance possible from your container plants.

If you have steps leading up to your front door, an attractive pot plant flanking each will enchant your visitors. Indoors, pots of plants or flowers help to create a cosy and welcoming atmosphere.

Decide ahead of time where you want to position your pots, then obtain plants that suit situation. There is no point buying sun loving plants for a shady position, for they will fair badly. In addition, some plants have really large roots, so they are best reserved for the open garden.

If you have an abundance of space at your front door, a group of potted plants off to one side will be more visually appealing than two similar plants put at each side. Unless they are spectacular, they will appear somewhat unintersting.

Group your containers in odd numbers rather than even ones, and vary the height and type. In order to integrate the groupings, include large rocks that are similar in appearance but just slightly different in size. Three or five pots of the same type and color, but in different sizes also highlights a creative effect.

With a modicum of creativity and the right information, you will easily be able to create a container garden you will be proud to call your own..

Here are several tips for creating a wonderful hanging basket or container this summer. The first is to use an artificial soil composed mostly of peat moss. Good soils such as Fafard or Pro-Mix use perlite, peat, and other ingredients to produce a soil that will not compact over the summer. Real garden soil compacts and turns into concrete under the pressure of regular watering. And when it does, plant roots stop growing because they require good open spaces to move into and absorb nutrients. Hard, compacted soils do not grow good plants so do not use real soil in your containers. I re-use my artificial potting soil from year to year. I dump it out of the pot. Chew it up with a shovel to cut up all last year's roots and add approximately 10 % by volume of compost. The compost increases air spaces and gives plants a boost in healthy nutrition for great growth.

Feed your plants weekly. Nitrogen, the engine of plant growth, is water soluble and as you water your containers from the top the dissolved nitrogen is leaving from the bottom. I use a fish-emulsion liquid feed with seaweed to provide all the trace nutrients my plants require and recommend it highly. You can use any liquid plant food (like Miracle Grow or Shultz) to promote growth. Compost tea is the Cadillac of liquid plant food and if you make your own compost tea, your plants will respond with bigger and better blooms as well as increased vigour.

And finally, no matter the size of the container, it is important to soak it all the way to the bottom at each watering. Continue watering until water emerges from the pot bottom. This ensures the roots can reach all parts of the container and grow properly.

Follow all these steps and your container gardening efforts will be successful.

If you are looking for plant ideas for container gardening, look no further. Who doesn't enjoy the enticing aromas from the scent of fresh herbs? Can you imagine what it would be like to have wonderful aromas wafting out of your kitchen as you cook with fresh herbs picked moments before in your container garden? Forget about needing a large outside garden to make this happen. Indoor container gardening is relatively easy when you follow these easy tips and ideas; and, herbs are a great way to start!

First let's pick the pot you'll use. Choose pots that fit the feel of your home. Is it contemporary or old world? Pick a pot that reflects your style. Herbs are attractive plants anyway and a well chosen pot will be beautiful in your home, as well as season your food. Once you have your pot or pots chosen, it is a good idea in indoor container gardening to add some bark chips and stones to the bottom. Herbs in particular like a lot of aeration and usually respond well to this method. As far as the type of soil to use, a loose mixture is best. Compact soil makes it difficult for the roots to grow properly.

The easiest way to plant your herbs is to place some soil in the container, add the plant, and fill the pot the rest of the way. In order to eliminate any confusion, on which herb is which, put the information stick that came with your plant in the soil of the pot. Indoor herb container gardening is a simple project that will add a new appreciation for cooking and growing your own seasonings.

There are few other ideas that will help ensure your indoor herb container gardening experience is a success. Remember that herb plants need an average of ten to twelve hours of sunlight a day. If this isn't possible naturally in your home, your best course of action is to purchase a grow light to provide what the plants need. Fertilizer is important to most plants, however since your herbs will be indoors they probably won't need much. Refer to the information tag for specifics of each herb. Finally, while bugs can certainly be a problem even in indoor conditions, be cautious about adding insecticides to the soil. Think organic. If you don't want to eat it, then don't add it.

Herbs are an easy plant idea for container gardening; not to mention, how fun and excellent way to add color and flavor to both your home and food. It is a rare thing to be able to enjoy fresh herbs any time of the year. You won't have to buy what is often expensive herbs in the supermarket; and, you'll have whatever you need fresh when it comes time to whip up your special sauce or season that roast chicken. With your own private collection of herbs to pick from, you'll never lack color or flavor every again if you choose to use herbs as your plant ideas for container gardening.

Although flowers, and regular plants work in containers, most people don't consider edible crops. Today we'll discuss fruits, vegetables and herbs that work well in container gardens.

Fruits

Citrus plants work very well in container gardens. Oranges, lime, and lemon are common. The foliage is very attractive even in limited light, but the more light the better. Citrus plants bloom during long spring and summer seasons. They are very fragrant, and can be harvested in the late fall or winter.

Blueberries also work. They can tolerate extremely cold temperatures, but they require special "acid soil" and even better drainage than citrus. They bloom in the spring, bear fruit in early summer, and have attractive foliage.

Vegetables

Perhaps the most popular container vegetable is the Tomato. With tomatoes, the larger the container the better. This is necessary because, when watering, the water distributes better. During hot summers, water every day and fertilize with a soluble fertilizer every week. Tomatoes usually grow as vines, so use a wire mesh cage to keep the vine upright. Plant tomatoes in August for the fall and early April for the spring. Give them as much sunlight as possible.

Other vegetables that work in containers are peppers and eggplant. Treat these as carefully as tomatoes for optimum bearing. Onions, leaf lettuce, and carrots work as well, and can tolerate more shade than the other plants.

Herbs

Common herbs grown in containers are thyme, rosemary, and mint. These plants are very fragrant, and release pleasing scents. They are a valuable addition to any container garden. Water them regulary, and give them enough sunlight. Fertilizer is not too important, but overfertilization can be a hazard. They can be grown year round, but be careful in extreme temperatures.

In our first try at gardening we were naive enough to think "plant it and it will grow", well, that bubble was burst rather quickly.

When we decided to try and beat the rising cost of everything, a garden seemed the logical place to start - it's local (our land), it's convienent (right outside our backdoor) and it'll produce in direct proportion to our efforts (we thought). Now, we have relatives that have that magic touch, where everything they plant grows to almost freakish proportions; prying that secret out of them is a different matter; nothing is ever given in a straight forward manner, you're spoon fed information that has been steeped in local lore then encrypted. So, our first planting was interrupted by neighbors that suggested that we till the soil until the soil was a powdery consistency, to aerate the soil; the next suggestion was that we need to amend the soil, because "nothings going to grow in this stuff"; next we were told we really need to get the soil ph, to know what will grow best; then we were told we need this pesticide for these species of pests and this other pesticide for that species of pests; I was beginning to wonder how people ever fed themselves before the advent of the grocery store.

We bought a book, with the idea that we could tackle this "gardening" thing using the imperical method to find out what would work. Now, I've been accused of being too methodical, at times, but, when you're asked to play 200 questions i.e. "what is a plant"; "what will the plant be used for"; "is it necessary to plant at all"; we decided to "chuck" the imperical method. The "holistic method" which got our heads spinning; since it seemed, that now, we were concerned about everything else related to the plants (too much info. I'm sure this method is invalueable, but for beginners, it put us into shock). The obvious had escaped us, until now, why not simply do what someone else, that is sucessful, is doing; then sort out all the details as we were planting (O.J.T.). Finally we were on to something that worked, we did know someone who was a sucessful gardener and was willing to give "good advise" - an inlaw - I cannot divulge any more since I've been let into the "secret society of sucessful gardeners", kinda like the "masons".

Our garden went through several transformations, all on paper, thankfully, and we decided on container gardening, it solved many problems, but not all unfortunately. After the last freeze in May when our plants were just transplanted into the larger containers, all was well; until a week or so later when we found "no plants" in the containers and deer droppings everywhere, seems we got the plants out of the reach of some rodents and right at the serving height for deer. This problem didn't go away until my fortuitous run in with my, now resident, outdoor cat; I don't know how she did it, I'm just thankful she did. So, now that we had a late start on the garden ,due to, I'll call it natual disaster, everything is going well again. Aside from things like: over watering, under watering, too much fertalizer, not enough fertilizer, which pestacide to use (which has been solved due to a change in attitude - more of a natural approach to pest control), and the numerous other things to keep track of... wasn't Sherlock Holms an ardent gardener?
