A natural landscape brings a flavor of wilderness to suburban, urban, and company surroundings by attracting a variety of butterflies, birds, and other animals. Once you've spent so much money and time on your home, you should have the exterior match your interior area.

Landscaping may seem like a big chore. If you have the mindset that you can't design or that you aren't creative at all, you might not envision the potential of your own landscape. You might spend a lot of time in your landscape so it ought to delight, please, and serve you. Proper landscaping can help to control the temperature variation concerning the inner and outer surfaces of ceilings and walls, and so reduce heat transfer.

Find out how you can have a beautiful landscape that could save energy, time and money while protecting your future. Landscaping may raise the value of your house at the same time as making your surroundings more delightful and interesting. Landscaping is a stunning and natural way to keep your home cool in summer while scaling back your energy bills. A well-placed plant, tree, or vine may convey efficient shade, act like a windbreak, and reduce your energy bills. At first plant smaller trees with a 20 to 25 foot spacing to allow for tree growth. At some particular point, you will need to thin your trees to maintain proper spacing.

When planting, dig a hole about twelve inches wider than the width of the root ball. When needed, partly fill the hole with earth so the plant will end up at a similar depth as it was when dug up. Planting with local plants is tricky, patience is required and the benefit is subtle. Edible plants come in practically every size and shape and can do the same landscape purpose as ornamental plants. A undersized area, roughly 20 by 20 feet, may be planted more or less exclusively with edibles that have ornamental plant prices and seem to be an decorative garden. Arugula, tomatoes, squash and their other such plants are currently not planted away from the view of people walking by.

Free Landscaping Ideas – How To Correctly Plant a Tree

Landscaping Ideas And Gardening Ideas

Planting a tree is a wonderful experience, and helps enhance the beauty of the earth we live on. But care and forethought should be exercised in advance to help insure that each tree can reach its full potential.

In general, it's best to try to plant young trees if you can. It's certainly possible to plant a mature tree, but it's very difficult to do for the average homeowner, and very expensive to pay for if you hire someone to do it for you. If it is necessary to have a mature tree for any reason, then it may justify the expense. But otherwise planting smaller trees that can grow into your home landscaping design may be your best solution.

The best time of year to plant trees is the springtime. The second-best time of year is late fall or even winter. You may choose to plant a young tree during the summer, but if so, then be sure to use one of the new wilt-proof sprays that help the leaves avoid moisture loss until the roots get well established. And if you are planting a tree that is taller than 6 ft., try to make sure that it's moved with a burlap root ball to protect the roots.

Preparing the soil is extremely important for both tree and shrub planting. Generally speaking, it's good to dig a hole about 2 ft. deep and about a foot wider in each direction than the full spread of the trees roots. Then make sure that the soil at the bottom of the whole is loosened quite a bit and is mixed with peat, loam, and fertilizer, before placing the tree in the hole. If for any reason you come across a layer of hard clay or building rubble as you dig your hole, be sure to remove a good portion of a that material and substitute in its place good soil that will promote growth for the tree right away. If you fail to do this, a new tree will most often not be able to get the nutrients that it needs and stands a good chance of dying.

A lot of people overuse manure as they feel that a lot ot it will benefit the tree. However manure should only be used sparingly on the top of the tree hole and not around the roots, as it can actually burn the tree instead.

For planting seedlings that are not balled in burlap, it's a good idea to protect it before planting by giving it a mud bath, or puddling it. This protects the roots from exposure to the air before planting. When you have dug the hole to the proper depth for the seedling, fill the hole with water to allow the soil to settle at the bottom. Once the water is drained, then put the tree in position and apply the soil and settle at around the tree's roots. Be sure to work the soil in closely to the roots, and don't allow air pocket's to develop in the hole. When the hole is two thirds full, pack it with soil tightly again and fill with water. Then go ahead and fill the soil up to ground level afterward.

Planting a balled tree root is somewhat easier because the root ball is being held in place by the burlap. So dig a hole about twice the size of the root ball and plant immediately. If the ground is dry when planting, fill the hole with water and let it soak in well before you actually insert the tree. Once the tree is in position, cut the top of the burlap and roll it back a few inches. It will eventually rot away into the soil that way.

After the first year, cultivate the tree as much as you can and keep weeds away by applying straw or mulch in both the spring and fall. This will also help keep moisture in the ground as well.

By following the guidelines listed here in this article you should be able to plant any tree correctly and successfully, and enjoy it's beauty for years to come.
About The Author

Having a low maintenance front yard is the goal of many people. You can get easy to manage front yard landscaping done by any of the professional landscapers in your area or you can do it yourself. Either way you can have front yard landscaping done that will take minimal work to keep looking fantastic all year round. If you are going to get a professional in to do your front yard landscaping though, be sure to tell him that this is your over all goal, that you want to have a yard that will not take a lot of work to keep up.

If you have less grass in your front yard landscaping then you will cut out a lot of maintenance time right there. Mowing the lawn can take up a lot of time and energy so keeping the grass to a minimum is a great way to save on work. Talk to the front yard landscaping expert about alternative that you can use to keep your yard look good with little lawn area.

Some people choose to use clover instead of grass. Using a clover lawn in your front yard landscaping is a good idea because it will save you money and time. You will not have to mow it very often at all and a clover lawn is even good for front yard landscaping in area that is prone to droughts. They do well virtually everywhere. And best of all for those who want to get out there and enjoy their front yard landscaping, bugs hate clover.

Watering the yard can be a big hassle as well. That is why many people incorporate automatic irrigation systems into their front yard landscaping designs these days. This can save you tons of time and money. This is one of the easiest ways for you to keep your yard looking healthy and well watered during the hotter months of the year. No more hooking up the sprinkler or having to drag out the hose. You can get a professional to install one of these systems for your front yard landscaping design quickly and easily or you can get a kit and do it yourself. I would recommend getting in a professional however, unless you have experience with this kind of thing. If you were to cause a leak then you could face some flooding and rotting and neither of these is going to do anything for your front yard landscaping, do you know what I mean?

Caring for both trees and shrubs is basically done in a very similar manner. The one major difference though, is that a tree usually only has one trunk, whereas a shrub can have several stems or trunks. And the planting of both trees and shrubs can be a little different too, so let's discuss the best way to plant shrubs in your home landscape.

It wasn't all that long ago that getting shrubs that were not only beautiful but also hardy was difficult to do. But today, there are many more varieties available including hybrids that greatly expand the choices for most do it yourself home landscapers. You can now find appropriate shrubs that provide outstanding color, bloom in various seasons, cover spots that grass simply won't grow in, and accomplish other purposes in your landscape design, no matter what region of the country you live in.

Shrubs stake out the middle ground in landscaping designs, as they are larger than flowers and yet smaller than trees. So they aid immeasurably in providing a varied and balance landscape theme. They can help soften the lines of a home, they can act as a decorative background for flowers, and they can even hide some things that you don't want to be seen. On top of that, they add character and shape to a yard, allowing you to trim and cultivate them as you wish. They also tend to be able to grow and reach maturity very rapidly, and last a long time.

To plant shrubs, it's usually best to choose early spring as the most favorable time. This gives the shrub a good long stretch of favorable weather in which to get well established. If you happen to live in parts of the country that are more mild year-round, you may be able to extend that planting season even into the wintertime. But generally speaking, for most parts of the country, springtime is when you want to start thinking about planting your shrubs for the next year.

The main reason for planting failure is dry roots and there are steps that can be taken to solve that After getting your shrub from the nursery, be sure to water it as soon as you can. It's often best to keep them in shade at least at first, mulch the ground around them, and you may even decide to prune back the shrub at this point, depending on the age of the plant. The older the shrub, the more it will need to be pruned back initially. That's why you often come out ahead of the game if you just buy less expensive, smaller shrubs to begin with. And although some plants like forsythia and azaleas can be moved while they are in flower, you should wait to move most shrubs until the flowering is done.

For some shrubs, who lose leaf moisture in the wintertime, you will need to be sure to water in the fall before the ground freezes. These include azaleas, rhododendron, and certain broadleaf evergreens.

Some folks are very hesitant to prune shrubs, but actually this helps keep them young and vigorous. Try to prune out the older branches first, and cut as close to the ground as you can. Many shrubs need pruning almost every year, especially if they have dead branches left over from wintertime, such as hydrangeas, deutzias, and privets. Others just need to head their flower heads pruned off after blooming like azaleas, magnolias and rhododendron.

With just a little bit of time and attention as mentioned above, you can insure that your shrubs stay looking beautiful year in and year out, and always reflect well on your landscaping design.
About The Author

Front Yard Landscaping Ideas For Around Foundations

Landscaping Ideas And Gardening Ideas

When choosing and setting out plants in the front yard or any landscaping for that matter, you need to consider more than just how things will look. You should also consider other factors such as sun or shade, duration of sun or shade, soil type, purpose, the elements, and what specific plants will require or do in the future. There are also a other considerations such as how close to plant to the home and its foundation.

When setting out plants in the front yard, place small shrubs and bushes 4 to 6 feet away from the home. If set closer than this, they could be deprived of sunlight or rain because of a wide overhang from the roof. They could also get fried from intense heat reflecting off of the wall. Placed away from the home in a wider staggered row rather than a narrow row, they also add a 3d effect to the landscape that makes the home seem more substantial.

Another consideration that most folks don't think of is the long term effects of planting around the foundation of the home.

Keep in mind the space that plants and their roots will occupy at maturity. Roots are a powerful force that can find their way through rock. They also don't seem to have much trouble with foundations.

Most plants, of course, require water. Watering, and especially flooding plants and beds around foundations creates a potential for a damaged foundation. This doesn't always happen but it does happen. If you're going to have plants close to the home, spot watering individual plants, a drip system, or even a low profile spray is safer than flooding the entire area.

Lime leach from concrete is a problem that I see quite often. It's such a common problem because it takes a long time to show up. Over time, lime leaches out of the concrete into the soil causing the soil to become alkaline. If the ph of the soil gets too high, plants will start to look sick and yellow. Usually, keeping the beds tilled with a lot of organic matter will buffer and prevent this problem. Adding sulfur and organics to beds that are already affected will help turn the problem around.

The main thing to keep in mind when setting out landscaping plants, along with how they'll look, is what they will do in the future. Whether it's front yard landscaping, backyard landscaping, or any other part of your landscape, keeping these main points in mind could possibly save you a lot of frustration and money in the future.

These front yard landscaping ideas are not about plant varieties or climate zones. As an architectural illustrator I'm coming at this from a little different perspective. Get it? Perspective?

I've created 100's of home illustrations. Each one dressed up with the correct shingles, siding, colors, stone, etc. predetermined by the builder, designer or architect.

Then comes the landscaping and that's pretty much left up to me. It occurred to me that home owners might benefit from the approach that I take.

I look at the bigger picture. I break up the landscaping into four groups. 1) Lawns 2) Shrubs/flowers 3) Trees 4) Backgrounds.

I know if you're looking for front yard landscaping ideas that backgrounds don't apply, so I'll just focus on the other three.

1) Lawns - Lawns are the foundation of an attractive landscape and set the stage for making every thing else look great.

2) Shrubs/flowers - Shrubs soften the environment around the home. I use lower or higher varieties depending on the space available while avoiding a crowded look & feel. I like to concentrate the color of flowers near the front door to draw the eye to the front entry. Although I don't use potted plants a lot, they can be quite nice if there is room and they're scaled to fit the area.

3) Trees – I like to use ornamental tree as an accent and a transition from the home to the shade trees. They can be quite colorful in the Spring time, but in general I don't show them with color. I use them for they're scale or size. In my renderings the focus is the home.

I use shade trees quite often in the foreground. I like to think of them as the frame of the picture. The shadows they cast help to create an inviting atmosphere to the front of the home as well.

So there you have it. The idea is to take a step back and look at the front of your home from the street or sidewalk. Think about what would enhance your home and not obscure it over a period of time.

Oh, one more thing. Call the appropriate service in your area before you start digging. Make sure you know where your underground utility lines are

Landscaping Ideas That Will Make Your Front Yard Look More Inviting

Landscaping Ideas And Gardening Ideas

With front yard landscaping you can easily express yourself and your home in a fun way. You might not think about it, but if want to make a warm and welcoming impression the front yard is the place you should begin. As the house is today, would you feel comfortable to walk up to the door and ring the bell if you were a stranger? In case you answer no to that question you know for sure that it's just about time you do something to spice up your front yard.

Your house and its front yard is always a stranger's first impression of you. And an easy way to make your quarters look friendlier simply is to add some more flowers to the garden in front of the house. Flowers are easy landscaping ways to implement in your front yard. These flowers can be used in all kinds of ways too. For example they can line a sidewalk or the path to your door on the porch. Flowers planted in nice beds around your front door are sure to be a delight to any first time visitor.

Other easy landscaping ideas for your front yard are trees and shrubs. These are a great way to line a front yard property border. Shrubs are also a great way to make things look neat and well organized. And as long as you give them the proper care they require, they will be there for you. But in case you want to cut down on the future workload in the garden, you should try not to plant trees that loose their leaves on the paths and make them slick. You can also consider using fruit trees or dogwood tress for your front yard. Most of these are gorgeous looking trees that will produce sweet calming scents for you.

Porches are a favorite place to many and what you do with your front porch depends on its dimension. A good way could be to add comfort to your front porch by using benches and tables to create an inevitable and warm look. You can also consider plants and flower as another way to add not only good looks but also colors and depth to your front porch. In most gardens, a climbing vine rank is a notable way to create a railing or arch way.

Of course your sidewalk or paths must be well maintained and clean from garbage. In case you have a sidewalk that needs to get repaired, then make those necessary mends to make it not only secure but also attractive. Sidewalks that are made of concrete and other sort of decorative stone or rock are probably the best in most cases. And with a little bit of creativity you can make it a central point of your front yard. You can also make a peaceful addition to your paths by building a pond or two. This will most likely do the trick, but you don't want create something that is too overwhelming. Should you decide on the landscaping idea with a pond or fountain to your yard, then adding some bricks or stones as borders or as a foundation will give your property a classic feeling.

A good landscaping advice for the front-yard of your house is to always keep it simple. You might want to, but you shouldn't make anything so your front yard looks like a tropical forest or that it makes people feel like they are in a maze in search for your front door. It doesn't matter what design you choose for your yard, just make sure you keep it neat and in good health and you will be pleased every time you stroll up that path to your front door.
About The Author

The front yard is one of the most important landscaping projects you'll undertake on your property. Getting the front yard right is particularly important because it's the part of the house that people most often see-and the part they see and walk through every time they enter. With that in mind, here are some landscaping and design tips for your front yard.

Keep the House Design in Mind

The first detail of planning your landscaping-and particularly the materials you will use for structures such as walkways-is to determine how your landscaping will harmonize with the exterior of your home.

This is important because it ensures a smooth transition from the outside of the home to the inside. For example, if your home is made from brick, consider creating walkways that are edged in brick, to pick up on the colors of the home and echo those colors on the ground. Then make the dominant color of the walkway match or closely echo the color of the roof.

Pay Attention to Walkways

The front yard is less a place to relax in than it is an area that welcomes people to your home. Paying particular attention to the shape and design driveways and walkways is important, because these aspects of the front yard will see constant use. Driveways and walkways should be broad enough to use comfortably-for example, people walking from the gate to your house should not brush against shrubbery or flowers, but should have enough room to move without being caught by plants.

Adding motion-sensor lighting to driveways and walkways helps make your front yard a safer place to move through at night-you can choose lighting that complements the exterior of your home, further enhancing the harmony between the exterior and the yard.

Choosing Trees and Shrubs

When choosing trees for the front yard, you must think in the long term-how tall are they going to be when fully mature? Will they block sun, or shed leaves on the driveway or walkway?

These are important considerations for any front yard plantings. The trees and shrubs you add will grow over the years, and you'll need to consider how much space mature planting will take up when you first add the plants. Don't forget that root systems will grow over time, too-larger trees have extensive root systems, and a tree in a poor location may disrupt walkways or even the foundations of your home.

In addition, remember that overhang from your roof may deprive some plants of sunlight, depending on their sun requirements and the season. Small bushes and shrubs should be places four to six feet away from the home to ensure they receive enough sunlight throughout the year.

Fragrant plants and trees are an excellent option for front yards, with attractive scents that welcome your visitors-fruit trees, herbs, and sweet-smelling shrubs such as lavender are good choices.

Consider the View

When designing front yard landscaping, consider the view you are creating both of the yard and of the home. For example, if your front yard is small, it's best not to cram too many plants into the area. It's important to ensure that the front of the home is in full view from both the inside of the home and from the outside, so that you can see out, and so that new visitors are not in any doubt as to the location of the entry point of the home.

Use plants and shrubs that emphasize the entry point of your home-for example, add a planter with colorful flowers on either side of the front door, or train a vine to grow over the exterior of the front porch. This makes your entry point more welcoming, emphasizes its location, and further eases the transition between the outdoors and the indoors.

Adding Color

Flowing plants can be added easily to provide a welcoming splash of color in the front yard. A good option that makes planning the front yard in the long term easier is to designate particular spots for short-term plantings.

This means that you first designate the spots for trees and shrubs that will be constant fixtures-that will grow and mature over the course of several years-and then plan to use the remaining space for annuals or biennial plants. For example, your short-term yard space could be the home of colorful bulbs in the spring, and then used for summer annuals after the spring bulbs have flowered and died out.

Alternatively, if you'd prefer a lower-maintenance front yard, use perennial shrubs and plants to add color, rather than annuals and biennials that have shorter life-spans and need replacing every one to two years.

Front Yard Landscaping Lessons – The First Step

Landscaping Ideas And Gardening Ideas

To create inviting, attractive, and easy entryway to your home and property, functionality of the landscape should be your first concern. Plants and other elements should be secondary concerns. And since the main function of front yard landscaping is generally access to the home, our first design focus would be how and where are we going to enter and exit our homes.

To what extent you can plan landscaping the front yard may be limited by some factors that you can't control. The size of your lot, how your home faces the street, and property lines can all be limiting factors. Careful planning and consideration of these factors will help you reach a medium of functionality and beauty in the front.

I know that this seems basic and obvious but many times folks simply just don't know where to start or go with their design. So as a starting point, by first laying out your needed access paths, you could possibly be laying out the framework of your entire design. Not only will laying out these areas take up a lot of space, but it will also create shape, areas to design around, and a visual direction for your ideas.

Usually, the most dominant access use in the front yard is for vehicles and parking. So we'll determine where we and our guests are going to park, drive, and turn around. Also, we'll decide where our walkways, sidewalks, and paths will lead from these areas to the home.

Your driveway should not only lead to entry points but should also allow for off street parking. The entrance of the driveway should be wide enough to comfortably drive in and out of. It may be desirable to also have a way to turn around inside the driveway. Having a turn around area is an added safety factor to keep from having to blindly back out onto busy streets.

If you have enough space, a circular drive is usually the best access to entries along with the safety factor of drive through. It also provides an opportunity for creativity as you can create some design on the inside of the outer circle of the driveway.

If a complete semi-circle drive isn't possible, you may have room for a regular drive with a simple cutout addition. This cutout can also be used as additional parking when needed. It doesn't need to be paved or even the sam material as the rest of the drive as it won't receive the same amount of use as the rest of the drive.

Simply widening the driveway in an area can provide additional parking as well as enough room to turn around. Again, this area doesn't have to be totally improved. It just has to drain well and support the weight of a vehicle.

By first addressing your vehicle access to your home, you'll be taking care of a large portion of the front yard design. Then by adding sidewalks and other foot access from driveways to the home, you'll possibly have the entire framework of your front yard landscaping created. And then deciding on secondary design elements such as plants and ground covers will be a much smaller task and much easier to visualize.

Making Your Home Inviting With Front Yard Landscaping

Landscaping Ideas And Gardening Ideas

Landscaping your front yard can instantly make your home feel more inviting and warm. Giving this area a touch of your personality will help to enhance your home and your environment.

One great way to express your personality to your friends and family is in your front yard landscaping. This is a great way to make your home feel more welcoming and inviting. Look at your front yard now. If you were driving by your house, would you want to come and visit? If the answer is ?no? or ?I'm not sure? then you need to rethink your landscaping in the front yard.

Increase the Interest Level
A stranger's first impression of you is tied up in how your home and front yard look. To make your home seem more inviting, you may want to consider planting some flowers in your yard. This is an easy way to enhance your front yard and your home. They can be used to line your sidewalk to the front door or they can be planted in flowerbeds around the front of your home. Either way, you will be adding color and interest to your home that will make your home feel more welcoming.

The Appeal of Trees
One easy way to enhance your porch or a property line is to plant trees or shrubs. Shrubs can make any property look neater and more welcoming as long as they are properly taken care of and trimmed. It is important to refrain from using trees that may drop leaves on walkways and make them dangerous. A fruit or dogwood tree is a good choice for the front yard area. They look beautiful and they can scent your lawn with a calming and sweet scent.

Do Not Forget Your Porch
Depending upon the size of your front porch, you can make it a part of your landscaping design. One way that you can make your porch seem more welcoming is to add benches, chairs, tables, and other accent pieces. This will help to give your porch a comfortable and warm look that will draw people to your home. Your patio or front porch is also an ideal location for plants and other greenery in pots or climbing on the railing or an archway. By making your front porch or patio more comfortable, you are increasing your living space.

Sidewalk Maintenance
Make sure that you keep your sidewalk and pathway clean and well maintained. If your sidewalk needs repair due to cracks or flaking, then you need to fix it so that it is safer and visually appealing. Rock, decorative stone, or concrete sidewalks are the easiest to clean and maintain. You can even add some creative touches with colored tile or stone to help make your pathway a focal point of your front yard landscaping.

Water Feature
If you want to make your front yard more relaxing, then you will want to think about adding a small fountain or pond. Choose the size of your water feature based upon the size of your front yard so that it is not overwhelming. You can even add some brick or stone as a foundation to your water feature or as a border.

Simpler Is Better
Front yard landscaping should be simple and neat. You do not want your front yard to look cluttered, because it will take away from the welcoming feeling that you are trying to create. By keeping your landscaping neat and orderly, you will be enhancing your home and making it more welcoming to your friends and family. That is your goal, isn't it?

In my last article on front yard landscaping I discussed laying out driveways and sidewalks as your starting point and how it could possibly help create the entire framework for your front yard design. So assuming that you're to that point, we'll move on to a few considerations of a major secondary element. Plants.

When choosing and setting out plants in the front yard or any landscaping for that matter, you need to consider more than just how things will look. You should also consider other factors such as sun or shade, duration of sun or shade, soil type, purpose, the elements, and what specific plants will require or do in the future. There are also a few other considerations such as how close to plant to the home and its foundation.

Front Yard Landscaping Ideas – Driveway Access

Landscaping Ideas And Gardening Ideas

In creating a convenient, inviting, and attractive entryway to your home and property, you should first think about functionality and then plants and materials later. With the main function of front yard landscaping generally being access, our first design focus would be how and where we enter and exit our homes.

To what extent you can plan the front yard may be limited by some landscaping circumstances that you can't control. The size of your lot, how your home faces the street, and property lines can all be limiting factors. However, with some careful planning, you may be able to reach a medium of functionality and beauty in the front.

I know that this seems basic and obvious but many times folks simply just don't know where to start or go with their design. So by first laying out your needed or desired access paths, you could possibly be laying out the framework of your entire design. Not only will it take up a lot of space, but will also create shape, areas to design around, and a visual direction for your thoughts.

Generally, the most predominant access use is for vehicles and parking. So our first focus should be where we and our guests are going to park and drive in the front. Also, walkway access from these areas to the front door, side door, or any other entry points of the home needs to be considered.

Most folks need a driveway that not only leads to the home but also allows room for offstreet guest parking. So if this is a needed or desired landscaping element, we should start designing with that in mind.

The driveway entrance should be wide enough to comfortably move in and out of. It's not required but a lot of times it is desirable to also have a way to turn around inside the driveway. This is an added safety factor to keep from having to blindly back out onto busy streets.

If you have room, a circular drive usually provides the best access to entries along with the safety factor of drive through. It also provides some shape and an opportunity for landscaping inside of the outer circle of the driveway.

Many times when a complete semi-circle drive isn't possible, there may be room for a simple cutout addition. This area can also be used as additional parking when needed. It doesn't necessarily need to be paved as it won't receive the same amount of use and traffic as the rest of the drive.

Simply widening the driveway in an area can provide additional parking as well as enough room to turn around. Again, this area doesn't have to be paved or totally improved. It just has to drain well and support the weight of a car.

By first addressing your vehicle access to your home, you'll have one necessary element taken care of and less area to have to have to plan for. Then by adding foot access from driveway areas to the home, you'll possibly have the entire framework of your front yard landscaping created.
About The Author

Whether you have a large yard or not, having the right tools and equipment can go a long way toward helping you speed up your routine landscaping tasks and get the results that you want. Not only having good landscaping equipment is important, but also taking good care of your tools and making sure that they are kept in a safe and convenient place as well.

Many home landscapers either build or buy a small tool house or room where they can store most of their landscaping equipment, such as tools, fertilizers, insecticides, and so on. This is usually the best storage solution overall, as it helps keep everything together and within easy reach. But if that is not possible, perhaps clearing a section in your garage will work too. The main point is to try to keep your landscaping equipment close at hand and well organized.

There are certain home landscaping tools that just about everybody needs. Some of the small hand tools that are very commonly used is a hand planting shovel, hand fork and hand cultivator. Having both a bow rake, and a broom rake is also a good idea. A weed spud can be a lifesaver to help with removing weeds, and having a good pair of shears or pruners is important too. Other small tools that are useful include your garden hose, a hand mower, roller, watering can, and a wheelbarrow.

Some other equipment that can be very useful, although not necessarily as vital for most landscaping projects is an edging sickle, a good lawn edger, pole pruning shears, hedge shears, and lopping shears. Of course, if you don't already have a built in sprinkler system, then you'll need a good assortment of sprinklers to keep everything watered. For your hose, it's recommended to have a reel to keep it stored properly and to avoid cracking and weak spots in the hose that can interfere with the water pressure as you apply water to your lawn and landscaping.

Some smaller extra items that can be useful to have around from time to time include plant ties, stakes, some burlap, chicken and garden wire, measuring cups and spoons, sand, peat, moss, lime, fertilizers for each time of year that is needed, and insecticides. Just be sure that you keep dangerous chemicals like insecticides in a very safe place away from small children. And also take care when handling insecticides on your own.

Of course, no matter how prepared you are you'll always find that you have to run out to the store from time to time to get what you need. But if you can think and plan ahead as much as possible, you can cut down on these extra trips quite a bit.

There are other items that can be useful at times but are not generally necessary. If you have enough room in your garage or tool house you may wish to include a pressures sprayer, seed spreader, soil testing kit, rotary tiller, and lawn sweeper. And of course many of the motorized landscaping tools can help make your job quicker and easier. If you can afford these and have the room, why not include them as well? However, you should be able to do a fine job with the essential home landscaping equipment that we have mentioned above.
About The Author

Evergreen trees and shrubs are generally more expensive than their counterparts, although many feel that they are well worth the extra expense not only for their year-round beauty, but also their reliability and longevity. Evergreens can range all the way from broadleaved shrubs like rhododendron to the tall pines and spruces that many people think of as simply "evergreens".

Perhaps the most common of evergreen trees is the pine. It's noted for its long, soft needles and its rapid growth. In fact, they often attain 60 to 80 ft. maturity very quickly.Red pine is popular as well and useful for creating textured backgrounds and windbreaks. The Ponderosa pine is a more compact tree that is often used for wind protection and ornamental purposes. The Austrian or black pine, with its spreading branches is very commonly used in the Midwest.

Perhaps the most widely planted evergreen that is used for a windbreak is the Norway spruce tree. It grows very fast, it's very hardy, has short dark green needles, and is shaped like a pyramid. The Black Hills spruce tree is also very tough and resistant to drought. It grows much slower than the Norway spruce but can still achieve a height of 40 ft. in time.

White spruce on the other hand, can mature close to 60 to 70 ft. in height and is often used in landscaping designs. Colorado blue spruce is generally hardy, however it does suffer some in extreme heat and drought conditions.

Red Cedar is perhaps the most popular of the evergreen Cedar trees. It's often used as an ornamental tree for both hedges and windbreaks. It tends to be very tough and hardy, and takes winter very well.

Perhaps the best overall Evergreen tree for windbreaks and screening is the Douglas fir tree. It's hardy and drought resistant, grows fast, has a pyramid shape, and looks great in most landscape designs. The Balsam fir, which is also known as the Christmas tree, is well-known for its fragrance and unique appearance. On the other hand, the white fir tree has an attractive silver color instead.

The Juniper family of Evergreen trees is often used in planting, with the tall types such as the upright Juniper being used as a textured background, and the spreading types like the Pfitzer juniper being used for groundcover and edgings.

Yew, has thick glossy needles and upward reaching branches, and can be used as both a shrub and a tree. In fact, they can even grow well in sun and shade, making it one of the most versatile evergreens.

Evergreens as a whole can be adversely affected by hot, dry weather conditions and need to be watered every couple of weeks or so at this time. Be sure to water it enough so that the moisture will reach deep into the ground at least 6 in. or so. Applying a layer of mulch in dry weather can also help protect against moisture loss during this period.

It's a good idea to prune evergreens in the late spring just before the new buds appear. And in the late fall give them a good deep watering to help prevent the branches drying out and cracking under the weight of snow or the force of wind during the winter.

As you can see, there are a lot of varieties of evergreen trees that accomplish many different tasks in a home landscaping design. Hopefully this article will help you choose the one that will work best for your home and help you care for it properly too.
About The Author
