Urban Landscaping

The overall objective of any landscape design, including urban landscaping, is to create a space that breathes with the home and has a relationship to its surroundings. It should reflect your visual desires and function together in every aspect. An urban yard or garden comes with big challenges. Perhaps your property backs up to the two-story blank wall of a neighboring townhouse. Maybe the space is all straight lines and right angles. Or you've remodeled your home which involved changing the elevation, adding a new room or reducing the size of your backyard, all of which affect the spatial relationship to the overall landscape. Turning Liabilities into Assets With urban landscaping, as with all landscape architecture, the goal is to create spaces in which the home and architectural elements have a relationship with its natural setting. For starters, consider the big picture-your assets and liabilities. Begin by looking at the large, possibly immoveable factors, such as trees, a long fence-line or pool machinery and equipment, and decide if they are liabilities or assets. In this way, you test the landscape garden design options. Landscape designers or landscape architects can bring expertise and experience to this process. Urban Landscaping and Focal Points Consider using non-plant material as focal points. Get creative with: ? Pathways. Functionally, pathways provide a way into the space. Visually, they lead the eye in, through, across and around the landscape design. Pathways can have a big impact on your experience as you transition from the street into the landscape. As an approach to a home, pathways tend to be the first insight into the homeowner's personality. ? Landscape lighting. The right landscape lighting is often recommended as a relatively inexpensive way to increase your property value. It allows you to showcase beautiful trees and garden elements, but, at the same time, lets you leave some things dark thus controlling what you don't want people to see. From a practical standpoint, it provides security and safe access. ? Outdoor water fountains. Outdoor water fountains make a graceful statement about a home by creating a pleasing and welcoming ambiance. They are especially beneficial as camouflage for traffic, humming air-conditioning units and noisy lawn mowers. Urban Landscaping: Tree Preservation The Houston area is filled with a fascinating variety of trees, from the graceful river oaks to small ornamentals. Their chances for survival are much greater with some preservation and conservation efforts. Trees face three main offenders when it comes to their survival during construction. Compaction is the main killer of trees caused by construction vehicles and materials, both during and after the construction of a home or building. Foot traffic is also a culprit when it comes to compaction. Root damage, the second main cause, can come from a variety of activities, but generally it is due to digging for foundations, swimming pools, landscaping, irrigation systems, drainage systems and landscape lighting. The third tree-killer is soil contamination which is normally due to construction materials, such as cement, lime, paint, turpentine or acid, being stored or dispensed around trees. Eventually, these materials leach into the soil and kill the trees. Urban Landscaping: Landscape Drainage In Houston, storm drainage issues are very serious due to our heavy clay soils, flat topography, and heavy forested lots compacted by years of construction that have increased impermeable surfaces. These factors have caused more streets and homes to become flooded during torrential rainfalls. Recently, local regulations are beginning to follow the standards used by the Memorial Villages that require temporary drainage systems, minimum pipe sizes, flow rates, calculations, engineered drainage plans, topographic maps, and as/built plans. "If drainage contractors embark on a drainage project without a complete understanding of these demands, homeowners may find themselves in the middle of a big mess that can cost thousands to rectify," says Jeff Halper with Exterior Worlds.

Natural Landscaping

Looking for a great way to improve the look of your yard and become a little more eco-friendly in the process? There is a new and popular movement in landscaping that is known as Natural Landscaping. Natural landscaping is the art of arranging a yard using local and naturally occurring plants and foliage. One of the best results of this kind of landscaping is the reduced impact that it has on the environment. Introducing foreign species of plant can sometimes have a disastrous effect on local ecosystems. Some plants have a rather "territorial nature," that is; any area where they being to grow they take over completely to the detriment of other plants.
Natural landscaping attempts to move away from the traditional "manicured lawns and immaculately kept gardens." They are really unnatural for this area. Manicured lawns and gardens actually mimic the yards that were traditionally kept in England and Europe. These areas are fantastic for the proliferation of short grasses but that is not so in North America. Our continent leans towards the natural proliferation of wildflowers and longer grasses. Natural landscaping utilizes these native plants to create yards and gardens that are in accord with what grows in the area naturally. This practice is extremely good for the local habitat as a whole as alien species are not being introduced into it and by utilizing naturally occurring plants we are practicing good stewardship and taking better care of our environment.

Landscaping Contractors – 3 Tips To Select The Best One For The Job

It is very important to get a landscaper who is well reputed and who is known for doing a good job of landscaping. Once the job is started and is on its way and you do not like the look of things it will only make matters worse for you, because first and foremost it will cost you more money and secondly it will not be easy to get someone else to re do and correct the earlier job. Like a tailor not many a landscaper would like to take on a job after it has been ruined by another. So make a few enquiries about the firm you select from the previous clients and then settle for it.
1. How to select a proper landscaper
To get a list of landscapers you could go through the yellow pages or search online. However, do not take on anyone on the strength of their own advertising, instead verify their services with their previous clients and if possible physically check it out before signing anyone for the job. If this is not possible and you are doing an online check you could ask for pictures of the previous gardens that they have undertaken and see the quality of their landscaping. Check out their portfolios and then make a decision.
2. A blue print of your yard landscape
The landscapers should come over to your place and check out the back yard and give you ideas on how to transform it into a picturesque place. Maybe they will come with their team or one person on his own if he can handle all the issues. Once they have seen the place they should give you a sketch of your back yard and tell you what they plan to plant where. If you wish to change anything you can let them know at this time, but it is always better that you discuss with them and then finalize the plan of the backyard layout and landscaping.
3. Adding to the existing platform
There are many things that the contractor can do to change the appearance of your landscape. He could put in slopes or rock gardens and many accessories that are available in today's gardening stores to beautify your backyard. You could have a bird pond, a trellis, and an arch with flowering creepers growing on it; make a bonsai garden a lotus pond and so many other wonderful things to do with your back yard. Make this place the haven that you are looking for in your spare time.

Exterior lighting is one of the more cost effective, yet more dramatic alterations that you can make about your household and usually a walkover and safe to set up, calling for only a few tools and some rudimental Do-It-Yourself knowledge. Exterior lighting is normally established along walkways, steps, and stairs, pointing up at trees, walls, and fences.
Landscape lighting can be sensational in its beauty and supplies a safe, secure and welcoming ambience. Put in properly the attractiveness that it brings out is without doubt. With good exterior lighting your dwelling becomes the "pride" of the neighborhood after dark.
Out-of-door lighting is used to bring trees and flowers to life after sundown, highlighting special areas around your home, light paths and stairs for safety and security. Not to mention it is a marvellous way to improve the value of your dwelling and to add and safety at nightime. As an accessory outside lighting is as functional as it is ornamental, improving the safety and security of your household, since the homeowner and family can move about the property in safely at nightime. Outdoor lighting is an easy improvement that will make a large difference in the safety as well as the security of your home as well its visual effect after dark and is safer to operate than conventional mains lighting. Outdoor lighting is usually a prudent decision, but especially about water features, which present a distinct danger after sunset and is perfect for highlighting footpaths.
Now that manufacturing systems have improved and costs are dropping , solar lighting has become the red hot product in the landscaping industry. It is a fast easy option that can brighten up your yard decor or landscape. An additional benefit of solar outside lighting is that it is easy to install, and the installer wouldn't have to dig under their driveway to run wires. One problem with solar landscape lighting is that you may not feel it is very effective beause they give off very little light and get dimmer as the battery runs out. Yet most solar lighting can be as bright as traditional low-voltage.
When designing your new garden landscaping project, it is paramount to specify the number of lights involved. You can always supplement permanent lighting with tabletop lanterns and solar landscape lighting tucked among plantings to cast a glow around your garden. In nature, most lighting, usually, is supplied by the sun, regulated by clouds and reduced by vegetation. Light, or its absence can dramatically change the visual appearance of your gardening designs. A decent trick is to play around with your timing and using different systems to alter the ambience over the evening for instance set for evening, not too dark, and with a ruddy orange ambiance.
